There are really no color rules, except they should harmonize. This design also contains a lot of diagonal lines. The name of the rug comes from a settlement in the NE cornerof the Navajo nation and means ‘Cottonwoods in a Circle.’ This is a very interestingrug and has some distinguishable design features. In the center of the rug willbe a rectangle that represents the center of the universe. The 4 rectangles, one in each corner of the rug, represent the homes of the four winds or thefour sacred mountains of the Navajo world. Zigzag lightning lines connect thesecorners with the center.

Many Navajo rugs have what Indian artists dealers call "lazylines." It is an insensitive and insulting term. I hope it will be replaced with the "Section Line." Section line lines are a break or diagonal joint in the weave that allows a weaver to work on a specific section of the rug and not have to reach the whole rug. She weaves one piece, then she moves on to weave another. This creates a diagonal section line. Not all Navajo rugs feature section lines. The Mexican imitation Navajo rugs' end borders are usually wider than those of a genuine Navajo rug. Side borders are also often wider. If the fringe at the ends is an extension of the warps then the rug is not authentic Navajo.

They weaved them on their handmade vertical loom with hand-knotted features on the rugs. These distinctive features of weaving made them more popular in the southwest. The tourists admired these rugs because of their design and authenticity. As the Navajo’s cultural heritage was represented on these rugs, they easily attracted the tourists of this region. When the rugs started to reach out internationally, the Navajo was known as one of the most skilled tribes of ancient America. In the 20th century, these rugs began to expand in other countries and are known as pieces of native American art. Before the 15th century, the Navajos weaved these rugs only for their survival. Hubbell’s home and base of operation were at Ganado, Arizona about 50 miles south of Canyon de Chelly. His tastes ran to Classic Period weavings and many of the early rugs made by Ganado area weavers were close enough in appearance to classic mantas and serapes to have earned the generic name, Hubbell Revival rugs. Hubbell guided his weavers by displaying paintings of rug patterns he favored. Many of these paintings can still be seen at the original trading post, now preserved and operated as a National Historic Site. By the 1930s, Ganado area weavers had thoroughly adopted the color scheme, but had moved away from Classic-inspired weavings to new patterns with a large central motif-often a complicated diamond or lozenge shape-with a double or triple geometric border.
