Burntwater, another center of vegetal dye weaving near Wide Ruins, has given its name to a distinctive rug type which combines the bordered, central geometric designs of modern Ganado and Two Grey Hills rugs with bright pastel, vegetal colors. Weavings that incorporate images of objects and people in their designs have slowly gained in popularity since the early days of rug-making. Such Pictorial Rugs may include small representational images within a larger geometric design, or may consist primarily-even solely-of a picture. Small pictorial motifs such as feathers, arrows, animals and other common objects may have held some personal significance for the individual weaver. As the modern trappings of Anglo culture filtered onto the Reservation, strange new objects such as cattle, trains, American flags, and letters of the alphabet caught the fancy of some weavers.

There is one exception to the additional indicators of price, material and fringe. Gallup throws, which are woven in the Gallup, New Mexico area, are small textiles measuring about 18 by 24 inches. Gallup throws are made with a cotton warp, and the weaving is cut off and knotted, creating a fringe on one side only. Typical prices for these textiles range from $40 to $50, as of publication. The only other authentic Navajo rugs that feature fringe are Germantown rugs. These rare antique rugs have fringe that was added on after the weaving process was completed.

The resulting rugs were not literal copies of older pieces, but were creative variations on banded designs using a wide palette of newly developed vegetal dye colors made from indigenous plants, as well as new, subtly colored chemical dyes. Mary Cabot Wheelwright, founder of the Wheelwright Museum in Santa Fe, probably started the “vegetal revival” by providing weavers around Chinle, Arizona with the new dyes and sketches of old weavings. Chinle Revival rugs typically feature bands of repeating geometric motifs alternated with plain or striped bands of contrasting colors. Common colors for Chinle rugs include yellow, gold, brown, tan, terra cotta, soft pink and other earth tones, as well as natural wool colors ranging from white to black. About the time of World War II, Crystal-area weavers developed their own banded revival rugs bearing no resemblance to Moore’s early designs.

Navajo rugs have a wool wrap. It can be difficult to know which type of wool warp was used if your knowledge isn't extensive enough. However, generally, cotton and linen are smoother than Wool. Wool is, well... wooly. As you can see in this picture, there are very few fibers that stick out beyond the warp. A cotton warp is used in one Navajo rug, the Gallup throw. Keep in mind, cotton was widely used as a warp until the late 1800s. To verify authenticity, look at other indicators. But make sure to include the fiber content of any warp in your authentication. Below is Jennie, a master weaver. It is obvious that there is no fringe and that the side selvage string contrasts well with dark wool. This rug has all of the characteristics that a genuine Navajo rug. It is 100% wool, with the warp and a side seam cord.
